Holiday Hope: RFS Gives Back Through Meals for the Homeless Volunteering

When characterizing professionals in the finance industry, most people think we’re just about the numbers. At RFS, we are—but those numbers aren’t always account ledgers, bottom lines and budgets. In this case, it’s numbers like 2008, the first time RFS organized a food drive; 150, the number of meals we delivered during that first company-wide event; 30, the number of employees and family members who participated during that year’s Meals for the Homeless volunteering; and 1,800, the number of individuals we helped feed during our December 2 event.

At RFS, we’re passionate about giving back to our community through charitable and educational activities. That’s why we founded the RFS Gives Back Foundation. The foundation, which was just an idea less than 10 years ago, has turned into an integral part of RFS’ corporate culture. It helps us build unity within the company while sharing the values of helping others whenever we can.

On December 2, our team volunteered with Meals for the Homeless—the event that inspired RFS Gives Back Foundation in the first place. We worked together to assemble meals and then donated them to Nourish Now, an organization that redistributes directly to families and over 60 Montgomery County, Maryland nonprofit organizations that provide food assistance to those in need.

We are proud that so many of our employees participated in this great cause. This holiday season, we encourage you and your company to give back as well. It builds employee engagement and unity within an organization, brings good to the community, but also improves your company’s bottom line. A Deloitte 2011 Volunteer IMPACT Survey states, “the affinity that employees feel toward an employer has the power to create a competitive advantage that can be hard to imitate, and is inextricably linked to organizational performance. Sometimes intangible, its force is undeniable. Without a motivated and engaged workforce, even the most brilliant business strategies can falter.”

We believe in building this passion within companies. We believe in giving back to the communities we live and do business in. We believe that together, we can make a real difference.
